NISMO holds a special place in the heart of all Nissan drivers. It is formally known as “Nissan Motorsport International Co., Ltd.”. As this name suggests, the division is involved in the racing and tuning activities of Nissan Motors, as well as the development, production and sales of various machines and parts. The company had been based in Omori, in the Ota ward of Tokyo since its establishment in September 1984, but moved to the new Yokohama facility seen here, in December 2012. It is the only directly managed shop to serve general users.
As for the name, though Omori is located further north in Tokyo prefecture, the facility kept the name Omori Factory even when moved south to Yokohama. Because the name Omori Factory was already established and connected with the NISMO name, it was agreed to keep this title even with its relocation. In other words, it is currently the same naming situation that a destination like Tokyo Disneyland has, though it is in fact located in Chiba Prefecture.
The showroom, where visitors are invited to view at their leisure, displays various trophies, helmets, and has space to feature up to 8 vehicles. At the time of this coverage, the Nissan BNR32, which was successful in Group A, was on display. A large monitor is also installed in the space, highlighting races and events.
The reception desk at Nismo Omori Factory accepts various consultations related to maintenance and tuning. NISMO fans will be pleased to find that the shop space is packed full of the latest parts, original wear and goods. It is not uncommon to see plenty of overseas visitors with their hands full of exclusive NISMO souvenirs to take home.
The factory is operated mainly by mechanics and staff who have specialized in this line of work for many years. Plant manager Mr. Ogasawara tells us, “There are 6 staff mechanics in charge of chassis, 3 in charge of engines, 2 staff in the showroom and 1 manager. Oh, and one legend”. (smiles)
This legend is Mr. Seio Sasaki, playing a vital role in Nismo Omori Factory, who was once active as a rally driver and also served as Group A director in the era of the R32GT-R. All these skilled craftsmen are responsible for handling the tuning and maintenance of user vehicles.
Routine vehicle maintenance, part changes and installations are performed in the climate-controlled maintenance bay seen here. This area can also be viewed by the public through the large glass windows in the showroom area. Here, mechanics directly communicate with car owners, and it is possible to receive detailed specialized services, like a trusted family doctor.
In this facility, there is also an engine maintenance room for disassembling and assembling the engine, and a diagnostics room for checking the performance of the completed engine. Many Nissan owners appreciate that the same environment, expertise and machinery to maintain racing machines can also be applied to their own vehicle here at Omori Factory.
NISMO’s functional parts have been developed through severe performance tests on closed circuits such as Fuji Speedway. The Omori Factory staff is directly involved in the development stages, and staff test driver Mr. Masami Kageyama is in charge of vehicle operation.
A variety of Nissan cars, both old and new, are maintained at the factory. For the past 10 years, staff have been actively developing full tuning and maintenance support, as well as special events for owners and drivers.
One concept called “Clubman Race Spec (CRS)” was born from these activities. The machine that CRS is aiming for is a racing vehicle that can also run safely and comfortably to and from the circuit on public roads. The goal here is to maintain a smoothly running machine for daily road use that can also attack the circuit at any time.
“We do not recommended tuning beyond the drivers ability. The basic attitude of Omori Factory is to install the correct parts according to the driver’s skill and purpose. This also helps create an atmosphere that even beginners can enjoy and level up at their own pace, in their own vehicle.”
Omori Factory staff retain a close relationship with each and every vehicle owner, as they can propose an appropriate machine tailor-made for each user. NISMO Omori Factory will continue to enhance the menu for tuning and driving skills while listening to requests and feedback from drivers and owners.
