Wait… Don’t Tell Me. This is Smokey Nagata’s Weekend Toy?!
The Galant GTO made its debut in 1970. It was popular for its curvacious styling and marketed as a wide-hipped sports car.
At the time of its debut, the top of the line version came with a 1600cc Twin Cam Solex 4-carbed MR. This impressive grade showed top level agility at the time.
With a minor model change in 1973 a 2000cc engine was added with the aim of decreasing output and keep in line with new exhaust regulations, as well as stay competitive with rival models.
The new top grade 2000cc model GSR was equpped with bolt on overfenders and sports tires, marketed as a pure bred sports car.
The base car for this tuned machine is the top of the line 2000cc GS-R.
When this car was about to be dismantled, it was grabbed up by Top Secret boss Smokey Nagata for full tuning. Power is supplied by a 4G63 from a Lancer Evolution with high-comp spec by GT-R pistons. Topped off with ITBs and an exhaust manifold, a comfortably running speed machine was produced.
Even if you call this an engine swap, the original engine was a 4G53 so it was able to be swapped with minimal work. One of the only necessary modifications was that of the oil pan shape.
The completed vehicle is equipped with an air conditioner, and the ride quality remains comfortable for both citiy driving and highway cruising. It’s usually stored at the Top Secret shop for when Mr. Nagata is in the mood for an old-school ride.
Riding this car reminds him of his childhood and when thinking about the car he’s able to take a trip back to those days.
The engine comes out of a Lancer Evolution I. A one-off intake manifold is used and GT-R throttles. It is finished to a high comp spec with the compression ratio adjusted for GT-R pistons.
The exhaust manifold is a total one-off original by Top Secret. HKS high cams give the engine a high response.
Athough we’ve been told there was not great difficulty in swapping the engine, the oil pan is customized using GTO and Lancer Evolution materials.
The interior is almost full factory, but the F-CON Pro is embedded thoughtfully in the center console, hinting at its potential.
Stroke up Project-μ upper mounts are used, and low-down suspension and reinforced shock are incorporated into the normal shell case.
The bolt on overfenders are genuine factory. These came equipped only on the GS-R model due to a revision of a past road traffic law. Wheels are RS Watanabe RS-8.
