A 3rd-Gen (S110) Silvia Equipped with S13 Silvia Mechanics! [Silvia Hatchback Turbo ZSE]
S13 Full Suspension Swap and SR20DET Transplant!
All work completed at the dealership?!
This is the third generation of the Silvia marque. The S110 made its debut in 1979. This was the model that gave way to the RS after a minor model change.
Although the Silvia comes in one grade below the Skyline, its FJ20 engine was a high-performance unit handed down from a racing heritage. The theory is that it was originally developed specifically for the Silvia.
The RS participated in the ultimate race, Silhouette Formula (G5) driven by successful racing driver Kazuyoshi Hoshino. Special models were produced for homologation for Group B rally giving birth to the 240RS that had increased displacement and overfenders from factory. Another S110 appeared in the Japanese 80’s police drama “Seibu Keisatsu” increasing the cars popularity for its use in flashy chase scenes.
The term “specialty car” was given to the model hinting at its sophisticated styling and cutting edge mechanics. The performance was also at a high level compared to other cars of the day.
The car we introduce here is not an RS, but a hatchback coupe. Its grade is called ZSE which came equipped with an 1800cc turbo Z18ET engine.
The owner of this car has had several S110’s in the past including an RS. A self proclaimed Silvia fan, he has fallen in love with this hatchback model and did extensive tuning work to maximize its performance and comfort.
As part of that tuning work, he has swapped in the transmission and SR13DET from an S13 Silvia which has crystal coating on the cam cover that gives it a modern touch. He has also upgraded the suspension and brake systems to more modern Silvia ones to erase concerns about maintenance or parts availability.
It may come as a surprise to find that most of the modification and update work has been done by the dealership. When the owner approached the dealer about work to be done, he was put at ease to understand that all the tuning work would be completely street legal.
As the Silvia’s performance was upgraded, the owner who originally intended to just perform mainly restoration work began to notice the fun in spirited driving. He then shifted his focus to be able to enjoy circuit driving in the car. This is natural through, for car lovers to find new ways to enjoy their car.
After overhauling the Z18ET that was originally in the car, he had concerns about finding parts that were becoming more rare and expensive. So he came to the decision to swap the engine to a more modern unit. The ECU and harness are SR20 type and the transmission is from an S13.
Struts happened to come out of an S15 but most other suspension parts are all from S13. One main exception here are the stabilizers and side rods which were taken from a DR30 Skyline.
Front brakes combine S14 Silvia 4-pot calipers with 280mm rotors. Wheels are RS Watanabe mag type.
The master cylinder has been replaced in favor of a 1-inch type from a DR30 that increases braking power.
The number plate was relocated to the bumper to make way for a rare North American export model 200SX optional center garnish. Trunk badge is also from a 200SX.
The muffler is stainless, something that was not available at the time when this car was new. Side markers are from the export model.
Clear cut headlight lenses and HIDs which were both found on online auction give the front a sharp clean face. The door mirrors are geniune Nissan parts, now very difficult to come by.
The seats have been refreshed with increased driver stability by replacing them with those of a BNR32 Skyline.
