When it comes to FD3S tuning, its all about turbo tuning. All FD3S are turbo spec and you can increase power easily and cheaply just by increasing boost.
But, looking back at the history of the rotary engine, its easy to see that NA tuning has built a strong following and captured the appeal of rotary fans. Back in the day, it was the Savanna RX-3 that stopped the Hakosuka GT-R’s winning streak at Fuji Speedway. Rotary powered Group C cars challeneged the large-displacement turbo machines by Porsche and Toyota. It was the high-frequency high-speed rotary sound and power that excited fans as it sped down the front straight.
Long established rotary tuners “Anniversary” have proposed a Weber Carburated NA spec FD3S with a very unique charm.
The carburator is a down-draft type made by Weber, the IDA51 (also available in 48φ). It is mounted via a Racing Beat intake manifold. This is quite a nostalgic feeling setup, yet Anniversary’s example controls the ignition carefully with a F-CON V PRO.
In the past, carburated vehicles needed to be reset according to the changing seasons. Anniversary’s experience and know-how solved a lot of issues related to this matter. The air conditioner can even still be used because the car easily starts and idles using the primary injector. You can enjoy the response and exciting intake sound that is associated with a carburated machine while still maintaining ease of use.
Of course, there is further tuning needed to enjoy the engine to its fullest extent. However, the Anniversary FD3S does not dare to modify the engine itself. The reason for this is that they want everyone to understand how fun NA spec rotary engines can be by lowering the hurdles and problems associated with tuning them.
The maximum output is measured at 195.7ps. Although not a huge amount of power, it can rev over 10,000rpm which can hardly be matched by other engines. This extremely simple system also decreases the risks associated with turbo tuning. There is little burden on the engine so a longer life and decreased fuel consumption are made possible.
In the case that more power is necessary, Anniversary offers a variety of power-up options so that you can step-up as you like. For example, you can incorporate a NOS system easily obtaining an extra 50ps or more. Peripheral specification with high-compression rotor made for FC3S can reach 300ps even naturally aspirated. This makes chasing down high-powered turbo cars on circuits like Tsukuba a reality.
Anniversary are also accepting tachometer scale changes according to desired specifications. This means you can enjoy the appeal of the ultra-high rotation type 13B right in front of your eyes.
