Smokey’s fully tuned neo old-school machine
Back in 2017, Top Secret debuted the R32 GT-R “VR32” with a VR38DETT which gained a lot of attention. They’re back in 2020 now with a C210-series Skyline, which is famously nicknamed “Japan”. Because this is Top Secret, this is not just a simply tuned old car.
Under the hood is an NA spec RB30. HKS forged pistons and connecting rod are mounted on the RB30 block. An RB type high cam (RB26 type) is installed on the head. Hand bent custom headers also accentuate the engine bay.
The fuel supply system combines the RB26’s throttles with a funnel spec to achieve the sound and carb-like appearance that is unique to NA tuning. Engine control comes from an HKS F-CON V Pro creating max output of 280ps. The transmission is a 5-speed manual from an R32 GTS-t.
“Since we produced the VR32GT-R, I’ve always wanted to keep making interestingly tuned cars. Though I originally considered a Kenmeri Skyline, we found this Skyline Japan to have a lot of potential. The engine and transmission came to us via Star Road (the famous old car tuning shop) and we began work around September 2019. There was particular attention on this project to processing the engine member so as not to interfere with the oil pan” says Smokey Nagata about the production process.
The dark gold colored mesh wheels are Star Road original 15-inch which are produced by Work. Tires are Potenza RE-01 with 205/55R15 on the front and 225/50R15 on the rear. The suspension is completely original, achieving its cool and slightly low down ride height.
The exterior work keeps with old-school style, including a front airdam chin spoiler and bolt on type overfenders. The GT-R emblem attached to the rear is a playful touch as the C210 did not come in GT-R grade.
BRIDE reclining type seats update the interior. The only other noticeble change is the steering wheel, as all gauges remain factory. An air conditioning unit will be installed at a later stage.
“The NA 3.0L engine is full of torque but more user friendly than expected. It lacks power to enjoy at top speeds but is easy to handle with full computer control and it will have comforts of factory when the air conditioner is re-added.” said Smokey about the car.
