The impressive machine of an American tuner who respects Top Secret
Located in Santee, California which is near San Diego is the tuning shop Speed Force Racing. The men behind this car are mechanic “Big Mike” (pictured left) and the owner/builder of the “First in America, Second in the World” V12 Supra.
Mike began planning and designing the V12 Supra nine years ago. The Supra is a popular base for tuning, with most people installing a large single turbo in a 2JZ to achieve peak power. However, this was too run of the mill for Mike. The choice for him was the 1GZ V12 engine out of the Toyota Century.
When he first had the idea, he wasn’t aware of the Top Secret Supra. It was pointed out to him by his partner Tim who had been reading OPTION Magazine for many years. He began researching the Top Secret car heavily and gained a huge respect for Smokey Nagata and his idea. Though they would both use the V12 engine, Mike’s approach would be different and he called it “My V12 Supra”.
The V12 has a closed deck block modification and reinforced components. Since the length of the engine is not much different from a 2JZ, a semi dry sump was fitted. It has two Precision 6255 turbos and one-off titanium covers the piping and accessories. The beauty of the engine bay is a real highlight of this car. It also actually has good 6th gear cruising fuel economy at 22mpg (about 9.35km / L). It is controlled by a Mega Squirt ECU which is a popular choice in America.
The transmission uses a factory Supra Getrag 6-speed. This is a similar choice to Top Secret’s car but a major difference is in the layout of the cooling system.
The Top Secret car was pursuing record speed moved the radiator to the rear to balance the weight distribution. As this car was mainly used for daily driving the radiator is mounted in its normal position. Audio components by ADDICTIVE AUDIO are installed in the luggage compartment.
The exterior features a Top Secret GT300 body kit and carbon wing. A custom made diffuser and carbon door panels from SEIBON are also incorporated. It is painted in a House of Color vivid candy orange but is in the works to be repainted soon.
The dress-up style wheels are custom made 20-inch Nutek Forged sold by Password JDM. The choice of gold is a homage to Top Secret. The car uses JIC Magic suspension and ROTORA front brakes. A complete suspension overhaul is in the works, with the consideration of introducing an air suspension and carbon ceramic brakes.
The interior has been tastefully modified, updating the steering wheel, seats, roll cage and guages. The luggage compartment houses a race-spec fuel tank and relocated battery hinting at the cars potential. Plans to change the seats to Tecnocraft full carbon are in motion.
The engine runs superbly smooth with plenty of low speed torque and power extending steadily up to high rotation. Stepping on the accelerator unleashes a sound not unlike a Lamborghini. The 1GZ is definitely more difficult to modify and comes at a high price compared to 2JZ tuning, but Mike says passionately, “This is Toyota’s best engine!”
Actually, this Supra has appeared very briefly in a recent Fast and Furious film. Though its appearance was fleeting, you can find the behind the scenes footage on YouTube that shows more in detail.
