An R34-based New Silhouette Formula Reborn for the Reiwa Era!
It’s not an RB, but a fully tuned 3.1L L28 engine!
In the late 1970s, the “Silhouette Formula” racers captivated fans with their ultra widebody shapes and lowdown aerodynamic forms. This is the racing series that triggered a flood of street racers to imitate these machines for the street. Among those silhouette cars, the R30-based TOMICA Skyline made the biggest impact and marked the Skyline’s true return to the circuit since the success of the Hakosuka 10 years earlier. That super silhouette machine was the legend that packed Fuji Speedway grandstands full each time.
It was the mission of Liberty Walk to revive the spirit of this legendary machine in an R34.
The exterior features an extended front air dam, wide blister fenders and an aggressive looking oversize rear wing. It echoes the appearance of the original R30 space fighter that rocketed along the ground. The R30 silhouette car of that time was a Skyline body over a semi-monocoque frame, but this R34 has been realistically produced in the same way without any major frame modifications.
The front fenders add 70mm to the width at each side and the rears add 100mm. The front of the rear fender has a wide duct shape echoing that of the original car.
Here comes the surprise: The engine bay houses not an RB, but a fully tuned 3.1L modified L28! It has 50φ Solex carbs that give a high pitched L-type sound when stepping on the accelerator. The transmission was machined from an RB20. The original TOMICA Skyline, by the way, was a 2.0L straight-4 LZ20B with a T05B turbo pumping out 570hp.
If you look closely, you can see that it was tuned to actually run. This is not just a show car, as proven by the heat shield that dissapates heat from the exhaust manifold.
The suspension is Airrex. Wheels are 18-inch Advan Racing GT wrapped in Advan Racing slick tires.
The door lining and center console are removed for weight reduction, and a yellow Cusco full cage has been installed. Twin BRIDE red racing bucket seats are also fitted, giving the interior a full race feel.
This is quite a unique tuning machine. It is said that it was produced in response to customer requests, but the reaction from the general public has been even better than expected. Production has a complete kit is being considered. Liberty Walk has proposed the customization of cars such as this one to promote creativity in the tuning scene in Japan. With a serious and aggressive appearance, this car still manages to be full of personality and playfulness.
