The legendary Veilside GT-R makes its comeback

The monster machine known as the「R1 STREET DRAG MODEL」!

There was a legend known as the『R-1 STREET DRAG MODEL』in the heyday of drag racing in Japan. It is a BNR-32-based super tune produced by famous shop Veilside. Pursuing the concept of “fast and cool” it marked a record time for GT-R on radial tires at that time in the 400m, 8 seconds 612. It is a car that is still widely talked about today.

Mr. Yokomaku of Veilside made a huge impact on the street drag scene launching Yokomaku Racing as a private venture. With his extraordinary flair and tuning ability, he quickly joined the ranks of top tuners. He also unveiled a series of complete demo cars at Tokyo Auto Salo, winning numerous awards. He also rose to greater fame around the world by producing cars seen in The Fast and the Furious films.

The RB26DETT tuned by Mr. Yokomaku still has all the power and impact that it had more than 20 years ago. The engine is reinforced with HKS forged pistons, original connecting rods and crankshaft, and equipped with twin HKS GT3540 ball bearing turbos. The rev limit is set to 11,000RPM and max output is 1380ps. Max torque is 118kgm.

The cam is 290 degrees for both intake and exhaust. A large-capacity surge tank was also produced as a one-off original. Throttle bodies are large-diameter type of 100φ. The injector is a 1000cc type using advanced technology of the time. Mr. Yokomaku apparently mastered all of the settings and tuning by himself.

The cylinder of the air shifter is affixed to the roll cage. When he went on an expedition to the America, the home of drag racing, he closed the valve of the air shifter just before driving and blew the transmission.

The undercarriage is also easily accessible. All arms have been upgraded to adjustable pillowball press-fit type. The rear suspension members have been thoroughly reinforced. The coilovers are original drag specific dampers set for emphasis on traction. The settings take into consideration the balance of the ATS LSD. The fuel tank was changed to an ultra-small ATL safety tank.

The twin exit exhaust that appears from beneath the passenger side creates an aggressive atmosphere. Of course it is a full-straight specification.

The exterior is equipped with an R-1 style street drag bumper with minimal air ducts and a drag wing. The bonnet and door panels are made of weight-saving FRP. Acrylic glass is also used. Mounted on the trunk is a parachute for slowing the car during drag.

The wheels are 15-inch Volk Racing TE37. Tires are Goodyear drag slicks used during the car’s trip to the United States. Now that grip performance has improved drastically since those days, we are curious to know what time it could set on the latest drag tires.

“It’s an old tuning car now (laughs) but I’m holding on to it because I want to drive it again someday,” says Mr. Yokomaku. It might not be long now before this monster machine makes it back to the dragstrip. It would be its first appearance in over 20 years.
