This WRX STI is a demo car belonging to A PIT Autobacs Shinonome, who are putting their all into car customization. Although this car is fully compliant with safety standards and comes with all the mod-cons you could expect, it is capable of getting round Tsukuba in just 1 minute 1 second and 3 tenths.
Only carefully selected commercially available parts are used: an STI front lip and side skirts are complemented by a Varis Cooling Bonnet and GT Wing Euro to complete the set. It’s a choice of aero parts that makes the most of the base car’s looks.
Following recent trends, a forged carbon fiber effect wrap covers the roof. Of course, this option too is available for end users who want it.
The engine has been thoroughly worked over too. Not only has the bottom end been changed to a semi-closed deck, it receives an HKS 2.2L displacement kit. The addition of a GTIII-RS turbo, also from HKS, yields 440ps at 1.6 kilograms of boost. Cooling solutions have been well thought through as well, with an ARC radiator and HKS oil cooler amongst other parts making this car circuit-ready.
The transmission is stock, but comes with an Ultra Shifter from German company CAE that A PIT themselves strongly recommend. This is technically a quick shifter, but by completely replacing the linkage, it produces a wonderful shift-feel that sucks you right into the driving experience. A PIT’s Ono-san says, “Even though the shifter is located close to the steering wheel, you can change gears with just a flick of your wrist.”
The seats are Recaro RM-S, here in a special A PIT specification with ultrasuede pads. The fact that you can choose whatever color you like to match your interior makes these a popular choice.
The suspension is based around Endless’s Function.com coilovers. The springs are X Coils Plus (F: 18kg R: 16kg). The bright red wheels, which stand out starkly against the pure white body are special A PIT spec TWS T66Fs (9.5J +60), and the tires are Advan A052s (265/35 R18). A mechanical LSD added to the drivetrain is also an original piece, based on the Cusco MZ.
Also worth a look is the “Caliper Guide” (name TBC). This guide is a kind of support for the standard monoblock brake calipers, which helps to keep them from flexing. This helps to reduce negative effects such as unevenly worn brake pads. The price will most likely be somewhere around 20,000 yen.
A PIT are currently right in the middle of developing a set of forged rims for the WRX STI. These are a chic 5 spoke design that, with a little lowering, will fill the fenders beautifully. They will be 9J +50 18 inchers, with a thorough approach to weight saving meaning each one tips the scales at just 8.5kg.
