300ps machine breaks 1 minute barrier at Tsukuba with super rigid body!
Circuit special awakens from 10-year sleep
This GDB Impreza originally came about as a track car around fifteen years ago. Its driving enthusiast owner worked with “Zowie Auto Studio” from Kanagawa Prefecture to develop it. Due to family circumstances it went into hibernation for nearly ten years, but returned to active duty five years ago, and is a track car once again.
The EJ20 at its heart uses its stock turbo, breathed on by Zowie to bring power to 300ps in this finely tuned spec. The engine itself is completely stock – this car is a case study in how fast you can go by optimizing the intake and exhaust systems. The exhaust system consists of a Fujitsubo EX manifold with a Tomei Powered front pipe connecting to a Zowie custom backbox. The computer from a GDB Spec-C Type RA-R takes care of the engine management.
On the other hand, the body modifications are super serious racing-car fare. A one-off full welded roll cage is fitted to a fully spot welded body. Any equipment unrelated to circuit racing is out – even the doors are light weight FRP. These measures squeeze the car’s weight down to 1200kg.
The brakes get new Project Mu slotted rotors, but the calipers remain standard. Zowie’s Nishiura-san explains “Most GDB track cars run big calipers, but when you reduce the weight as much as this, there’s no problem at all using the stock ones.”
In the suspension department, a special set of coilovers based on Tein parts form the basis, with the owner carrying out the setup himself. Apparently he’s been using know-how from setting up his child’s racing kart to pursue a suspension setup that meets his expectations.
The car is dressed for battle in a front under-spoiler and GT wing the owner made himself. These may be DIY parts, but Zowie have performed thorough strength tests, proving their dependability.
On the day of the Time Attack (Attack Tsukuba 2021), the car recorded a time of 59.918. Partly due to a hot road surface, the owner didn’t manage to top his personal best of 59.4 seconds, but says the run felt good. We’re eagerly anticipating seeing how this Impreza progresses after awakening from its long sleep and hitting the track once again.
